Email National Trust - No Lease for the Gondola

Newry Mourne and Down District Council expects the National Trust to provide a lease at Thomas' Mountain quarry where a visitors centre and the top station of the gondola would be built.

<div>We understand that the National Trust Northern Ireland is being expected by Newry Mourne and Down District Council to give a lease of Thomas`s Mountain quarry for the top station of a gondola, which will contain a huge visitor centre and ancillary services. </div>

<div>As signatories of the <a href="https://my.actnowni.org/petitions/stop-the-mourne-mountains-gondola-project">Stop The Mourne Mountains Gondola petition</a>, we wish to state our support to the National Trust in resisting the imposition of these structures on National Trust land that should be conserved for biodiversity, its landscape value and free access for recreation.<br><br></div>
<div>If a lease were to be given to the council, we foresee that enormous damage would be done to the immediate area of the quarry and to the mountain slopes of Millstone Mountain, Thomas's Mountain and Slieve Donard. Donard Park and the forest trails would be industrialised with the noise and disturbance of the bottom station, pylons, cables and gondola cars. Construction, maintenance and service vehicles would spoil the peace and quiet of the forest. Many of the magnificent old trees of the Glen River would be cleared.</div>

<div>We do not believe that the council would solve the traffic and parking problems that would be much worse than at present. The expected numbers of paying visitors is completely unrealistic. The business would fail if there was insufficient income to sustain the operation. Ratepayers would suffer with the spiralling costs of a difficult construction project like this and with its subsequent unsustainable operating and maintenance costs. In the event of failure there would be the removal costs too.<br><br></div>
<div>We ask the National Trust to say no to the project now before more money is wasted and the opportunity is lost to divert the effort towards sustainable alternatives. At a time of climate and biodiversity crisis, this is clearly the wrong project.</div>
